For cities, municipalities and government organisations

What can Aurora offer to municipalities, cities and government organisations?

Cityscape

What we do

Aurora is a community that leverages technology to help people live more sustainably. When you take the quiz, you receive accessible, actionable info to help reduce your carbon footprint. When a whole city or organisation takes the quiz, the real magic happens.

Informing and empowering citizens

While gathering valuable data

And lowering emissions

All through a quick and easy tool implementation.

Geographical data on emissions and behaviour of individual citizens

While the Aurora quiz is simple and easy to do, the data that it collects is powerful. For a city, municipality or government, this data can guide new sustainable initiatives. Some ideas of how that data could be used:

Understand the renewable energy landscape

For instance, if you can see that a majority of people have their own renewable energy in a specific area, you know it might be better to install renewable energy sources in another area.

Location scoping for car charging stations

If you can see how many citizens drive electric cars, how far they drive them, as well as where and how much they’re charging them, you can determine the best way to build charging infrastructure.

Data on waste and agriculture potential

Even understanding the dietary changes of a city can provide useful data on reducing waste and supporting local agriculture.

Quick impact against Climate Goals at a fraction of the cost

Many cities have committed to climate goals that will require both expensive and time-consuming sustainability initiatives. Aurora offers a quick way to lower emissions across the whole city and create lasting change at a fraction of the cost of big infrastructure changes.

Empowering and engaging citizens

Through offering the Aurora tool to citizens, a city is empowering them with information on both their current footprint and ways that they can easily improve it. It is a meaningful way to engage communities and allow them to contribute towards the greater goals of the city.

What do I get when I use the Aurora Sustainability Platform as a city?

Landing page

What sustainability reporting standards does Aurora align with?

Green Gas Protocol Logo

Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol

Reporting on data gathered using the Aurora tool for cities would fall under a methodology called consumption-based accounting. This means that when citizens lower their carbon footprint, the city is able to report on this in a way that is standard protocol. This approach was used by the King County in the U.S. state of Washington in 2012.

Sustainable Development Goals Logo

UN Sustainable Development Goals

Goal 12: Responsible consumption and production

Through applying Aurora across your organisation, you are contributing towards the key targets of this goal including:

  • By 2030, substantially reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse.
  • Encourage companies, especially large and transnational companies, to adopt sustainable practices and to integrate sustainability information into their reporting cycle.
  • By 2030, ensure that people everywhere have the relevant information and awareness for sustainable development and lifestyles in harmony with nature.

Goal 13: Climate Action

Through implementing the Aurora tool, you are contributing towards a key target of this goal: Improve education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning.

How easy is it to implement?

01

An onboarding session

In this quick session, the Aurora team will understand your requirements and goals so that we can assist in implementing the tool optimally.

02

Adding to the system

We are able to add cities in 15 minutes to the system. In this step, we will provide you with the URL for your customised website and dashboard.

03

Communication

You’ll send citizens to the custom website where they can take the quiz. The Aurora team can assist with any communication material and also follow up with reminders or initiatives to encourage citizens to take the quiz.

04

Dashboard and quiz usage for a year

Your city will be able to use the tool for a year and track all changes and improvements in citizen footprint when new initiatives are implemented or challenges are run.

Thumbs Up

What is the quiz based on? Are the results credible?

For emissions, we use what’s referred to as emission factors. These are international standards in each region for calculating the CO2 of a certain activity. The Aurora score is our IP. We created it because not everything can be quantified in CO2. For instance, having sustainable investments: It’s impossible to know what’s in every user’s portfolio. So we give users behavioural points for the fact that they invest green. The Aurora score is made up of weighted behaviour and emissions results.  This article explains the methodology.
